The A4988 Stepper Motor Driver Board, a product of Allegro, is a highly functional microstepping driver for dual bipolar stepper motors. It is equipped with features such as current limiting, overcurrent protection, and five distinct microstep resolutions. The board operates within a voltage range of 8-35V and can manage motors up to approximately 1A per phase without the need for cooling mechanisms like a heatsink or fan. With sufficient supplementary cooling, it can handle up to 2A per coil.
Specifications:
- Microstep resolutions include Full step, Half step, Quarter step, Eighth step, and Sixteenth step
- Adjustable current control facilitated by a potentiometer allows for the setting of the maximum current output, enabling the use of higher voltages to reach higher step rates
- Intelligent decay mode selection automatically determines the suitable current decay mode (fast decay or slow decay)
- Protection features include over-temperature thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, crossover-current protection, and short-circuit protection
- Requires a logic voltage supply (3-5.5V) connected between VDD and GND pins, and a motor power supply (8-35V) connected between VMOT and GND pins
- Decoupling capacitors should be positioned close to the board, and the power supplies should be capable of delivering the expected currents (up to 4A for the power supply)
Important Note:
Do not attempt to make any wiring or motor connections while the driver is powered as it can lead to serious damage to the driver. Always disconnect the power before making motor connections or adjustments.
