CD4017 Integrated Circuit DIP-16
The CD4017 is a Johnson Counter (decade counter) integrated circuit manufactured using CMOS technology. This IC has 10 outputs, and with each clock pulse, only one of these outputs becomes active. The CD4017 is widely used in sequential logic circuits, timing circuits, LED animations, frequency dividers, and similar applications.
Key Features:
Operating Voltage: Typically operates between 3V and 15V, though some versions can support up to 18V.- Number of Outputs: 10 sequential outputs (Q0-Q9).
- Clock Input: Each clock pulse activates the next output in sequence.
- Reset Input: When the reset pin is activated, the counting process resets, and the Q0 output becomes active.
- Enable Input: When the enable pin is active, the clock input is disabled, and counting stops.
- Low Power Consumption: Thanks to CMOS technology, it consumes low power.
Working Principle:
The CD4017 activates the next output with each rising edge of the clock input. For example, initially, the Q0 output is active. When the first clock pulse arrives, Q1 becomes active, and with the second clock pulse, Q2 becomes active, continuing this sequence up to Q9. After Q9, it resets to Q0, and the cycle repeats.
Application Areas:
- LED Animations: Used in sequential LED lighting applications.
- Frequency Divider: Divides the input frequency by 10.
- Timing Circuits: Used in circuits where outputs need to be activated sequentially at specific time intervals.
- Games and Entertainment Electronics: Commonly used in simple electronic games.
Pin Configuration:
- Pin 14 (Clock): Clock input.
- Pin 13 (Enable): Enable input (counting continues when LOW).
- Pin 15 (Reset): Reset input (counting resets when HIGH).
- Pin 16 (VDD): Positive supply voltage.
- Pin 8 (VSS): Ground (GND).
- Pin 3 (Q0) - Pin 11 (Q9): Sequential outputs.
The CD4017 is a simple and effective counter IC, making it a popular component in many electronic projects.
